If you plan on travelling in the near future, for business, for the holidays, or for a family vacation, don’t forget your dental care while you are visiting with family, seeing the sights, or getting ready for your presentation.

If you are leaving on vacation, schedule an exam before you leave so that your dentist can treat any potential problems. You should let your dentist know if you are planning a trip, and put the number of the practice in your phone, or some place where you can easily access it. If you find yourself in need of urgent dental care, you can contact your dentist for a referral, and your dentist can see you for a follow-up appointment when you come home. You might ask your dentist for a list of practices you can visit if a dental emergency comes up while you travel. If you will be traveling overseas, make note of the number of the American embassy, which can help you in the case of a severe dental problem.

It is important that you keep your toothbrush and toothpaste clean while you travel. Those items should be stored away from the rest of your belongings. When you brush your teeth, don’t leave your toothbrush in the hotel bathroom when you are done, since bacteria will be present there. Instead, place your toothbrush in a clean, vented container so that the air can dry it. Do not set your toothpaste cap on the sink, and make sure that you do not drop it on the floor. You may consider purchasing a travel toothbrush or a disposable toothbrush.

If you are in for a long drive, keep healthy snacks and plenty of water on hand. Apples, carrots and broccoli not only provide vitamins and minerals for your body, but will help scrub the plaque from your teeth. Drinking plenty of water will prevent dehydration and cleanse harmful acids in your mouth.

Even if you aren’t planning a trip any time soon, Dr. Chris Lindsey and the staff at Chris E. Lindsey DDS will be happy to see you and address any of your dental needs. If you live in the Palo Alto, California, area, you can make an appointment by calling 650-327-3770.
